Tea lover

I am currently house-sitting for a close friend, and one of the joys of being here (other than waking up with a Maine-Coon purring on my face) is making a pot of tea and drinking it from beautiful teaware (thanks Tamsin!).

Genmaicha green tea

Today I started the day brewing one of my Japanese favourites – genmaicha. This is essentially green tea with roasted rice, also known as the ‘popcorn’ tea due to its tasty aroma. Perfect start to a grey, overcast morning.

    A pretty tea set!

I like the sound of the tea you describe; I have not had it.

One of my favorite teas, which I haven’t had in a few years as I haven’t run across it, is lapsang souchong. I really like the smoky taste, particularly if honey is added. I’ve even used it for cooking, similar to how Liquid Smoke might be added for flavor!

It’s apparently an acquired taste though; someone once told me it smelled like used gym socks. Their loss! 😀

I have not had lapsang souchong – there are so many tea varieties out there now, I mainly stick to herbals from the western tradition (I have a soft spot for herb and flower gardens of the English cottage style), and slowly making my way through Chinese and Japanese teas. I imagine when I move to Melbourne later in the year a whole new tea world will open up, and I hear it’s a great city for cafes and tea bars. Thank you for visiting my germinating blog 🙂 Blessings.
